Cardiff is home to the Cardiff Kook—a surfer statue that’s often criticized, and sometimes revered, as a parody of California’s iconic sport. Magic Carpet Ride is the official name of the 6-foot high bronze sculpture of a surfer by Matthew Antichevich, and has been nicknamed the Cardiff Kook by locals.
Cardiff State Beach and its two reefs create excellent breaks for surfing, while its kelp beds are well-suited for diving. Pitch a tent seaside at San Elijo, the beach in front of the campground is open for day use and is ideal for families. If you like the idea of oceanfront camping, imagine living in this paradise.
